picture of laura banksMy primary research has involved the implementation of novel magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technology in order to determine cardiac phosphorus metabolism in pediatric disease cohorts at The Hospital for Sick Children. More specifically, the goal of my research is to determine factors affecting cardiac phosphorus metabolism in adolescents who are healthy, overweight, or born with heart disease. I am specifically interested in determining the effect of physical activity and sex on cardiac phosphorus metabolism, as it relates to heart function in these cohorts. This is a new and exciting research area with significant potential for impacting cardiovascular health. Our findings may enable us to implement exercise and/or pharmacological interventions to more specifically target cardiovascular health.
