The Cardiovascular Sciences Collaborative Program has forged successful links between the University of Toronto campus and its peripheral sites (teaching hospitals, research institutes and centres). These links provide students with the unique opportunity and exposure to the broad spectrum of cardiovascular based research at the University of Toronto. This year, in addition to continuing to solidify a financial base to support our activities and students, there were a number of departments that underwent restructuring and their relationship with the program was also redefined.
Facilities for the Program are located on campus in the FitzGerald Building as well as at a satellite office at The Toronto Hospital. Day-to-day functions of the Program are handled by the Program Director, Dr. C. Wittnich, and Administrative Coordinator, Victoria Simpson, with the guidance of the Executive Committee. Thanks to all the faculty, students, and participants in our activities for another successful year! Dr. Carin Wittnich

PROGRAM SPONSORED ACTIVITIESAnnual Cardiovascular Scientific Day - May 21, 1998The Annual Scientific Day, hosted by the Cardiovascular Sciences Collaborative Program, University of Toronto and the Centre for Cardiovascular Research (CCR), is organized to bring together faculty and students interested in cardiovascular sciences. The aim is to provide an update in the frontiers of cardiovascular science and each symposium focuses on either clinical or basic science research. Attendees are encouraged to actively participate, either in the form of poster presentation or oral discussion, promoting cross-fertilization of ideas and assist research direction within our own cardiovascular community. The scientific day was held at the Inn on the Park where over 350 registrants enjoyed a pleasant day of camaraderie, excellent science, and good food. This year the focus was on "Cardiac Issues: Past, Present and Future". A central featured symposium consisted of a number of speakers both local and invited. Dr. Victor J. Dzau, Chairman, Department of Medicine, Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston was the Annual Isadore E. Smith Lecturer, hosted by the CCR. He discussed "Innovative Molecular Approaches for Revascularization". This extremely well received talk was then followed by a presentation on "Angiogenesis and Vascular Protection: Targets for Gene Transfer" (Dr. Duncan Stewart), and one on "Surgical Angiogenesis by Cell Transplantation" (Dr. Richard Weisel). Then Dr. Craig R. Smith, Chief, Div. of Cardiovascular Surgery and Director, Cardiopulmonary Transplantation, Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center gave his views on "Progress in Transmyocardial Revascularization". The morning was topped off by a featured research session where four of our dynamic researchers gave talks on "Endogenous Inhibitors of Cardiac Hypertrophy" (Dr. T.G. Parker), "Gene Therapy for Myocardial Revascularization" (Dr. T.M. Yau), "New Insights into Vessel Wall Repair After Angioplasty and Stenting" (Dr. B.H. Strauss), and "Oxygen Therapy and the Failing Heart" (Dr. G.E. Newton). After a very pleasant lunch, the afternoon featured The Harald Sonnenberg Symposium which was held to honor Dr. Harald Sonnenberg who retired in 1998 following a long and illustrious career. Dr. Sonnenberg was honored for his unique contributions to integrative physiology focusing on renal sodium handling and hemodynamics. The session covered "Neural and Hormonal Aspects of Cardiorenal Integration" and was highlighted by a presentation from Dr. Sonnenberg who gave an overview on "Na, ECF Volume and ANP in the Heart". His talk was followed with "ANF and the Autonomic Nervous System" (Dr. U. Ackermann), "Interactions Between ANP and the Sympathetic Nervous System in Humans" (Dr. J.S. Floras), "Lessons from "Dead" Physiologists" (Dr. M. Halperin) and finally "Growth Factors and Renal Hemodynamics" (Dr. J.W. Scholey). Simultaneous sessions rounded out the afternoon and focused on the following topics: adult congenital heart disease, frontiers in organ preservation and pathobiology of cardiovascular disease. There were 40 abstracts submitted for the poster session, which was expanded to an hour, permitting individual short presentations by each of the six poster finalists. An additional hour of poster viewing was available during the breaks and over lunch. These posters highlighted our cardiovascular trainees in their particular area of interest. Poster prizes, in the form of textbooks, were generously provided by Lippincott-Ravin Publishers (1st Prize), and Williams & Wilkins Publishers (2nd and 3rd Prizes). 1st Prize - S.M. Wells ~~ Structural mechanical relations in the developing thoracic aorta (Co-Supervisors: Drs. L. Adamson/L. Langille) 2nd Prize - M.A. Borger ~~ Does rapid rewarming during cardiopulmonary bypass increase neuropsychological impairment? (Supervisor: Dr. R.D. Weisel) 3rd Prize - W.J. Wallen ~~Gender differences in the hearts adaptation to afterload (Supervisor: Dr. C. Wittnich) Continuing medical education credits were issued for this meeting; continuing the high quality of scientific content (6.5 hours of category 1 credit toward the AMA Physicians Recognition Award and 9.35 MOCOMP credits for the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada). Faculty could use these credits for their professional development. My thanks are extended, once again, to industry for their continued financial support and generosity which is so essential to the success of this meeting. Major sponsorship included Bristol-Myers Squibb, Hoechst Marion Roussel Canada, Merck Frosst Canada, Medtronic of Canada, Parke-Davis, Pfizer Canada, St. Jude Medical Canada, and Schering Canada. Because of their support, we were able, once again, to provide an open registration and complimentary luncheon. Students who completed the Cardiovascular Sciences Collaborative Program were recognized at the Awards ceremony and included Bryce Cowan, PhD (Supervisor: Dr. M. Rabinovitch), Vivek Rao, PhD (Supervisor: Dr. R.D. Weisel), Jack Wallen, MSc (Supervisor: Dr. C. Wittnich), Bin Zhou, PhD (Supervisor: Dr. M. Rabinovitch), and Meredith Ford, MSc (Supervisor: Dr. G. Wilson). The Annual Cardiovascular Scientific Day continues to be the highlight of our academic year! Medtronic Travel Award Two competitions were held (spring and fall) for the Medtronic Travel Award. This award, established in 1995, helps to defray costs of travel for Program students presenting their research work at recognized scientific meetings. Students supported by this award this academic year were: Fall 1997: Warren Ball: In Vitro Evaluation of TFG-b1 and IGF-I Expression in Idiopathic Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM). Annual Meeting of the Canadian Cardiovascular Society, October 1997 (Supervisor: Dr. Ren-Ke Li, IMS). Catherine Mason: Bioengineering patent ductus arteriosus in post-natal lambs. American Heart Association, November 1997 (Supervisor: Dr. M. Rabinovitch, LMP). Spring 1998: Andrea Burry: Apoliprotein D is Regulated by RNA Binding Protein Light Chain 3 of Microtubule Associated Protein 1. 1998 Experimental Biology Meeting, April 1998 (Supervisor: Dr. M. Rabinovitch, LMP). Bigelow Book Prize The Bigelow Book Prize consists of 2 books written by Dr. W.G. Bigelow entitled "Cold Hearts" and "Mysterious Heparin". This prize was established in 1995 by the Cardiovascular Sciences Collaborative Program to recognize and honour a pioneer clinician and scientist in the field of cardiovascular sciences. Awardees should exemplify the personal traits of Dr. Bigelow -- curiosity, drive, and scientific integrity. The award is given in every year that a qualified student is identified. Qualifications include sustained academic scientific excellence, innovative experimental approaches, original discoveries and good scientific productivity. Some weight is given to work that has recognizable clinical relevance, especially that which promises to improve patient care.
1995 - Dr. John S. Ikonomidis This year, an Annual Bigelow Luncheon, held at Hart House, was instituted to bring together the previous and current awardees and their supervisors. This provided a delightful opportunity to chat informally with Dr. Bigelow. Inside the Heart Lecture Series For this academic year the lecture series was focused in two main areas: Hormones and Molecular. A number of interesting speakers, once again, contributed their time and knowledge. Topics covered were vast and the emphasis continues to be to cover a broad spectrum from molecular and genetic through to whole organ and systems in specific and focused subject areas. Part of this lecture series includes the Pfizer Canada Featured Symposia:
Dr. Jean Davignon, OC, MD, CSPQ, FRCPC, FRSC 1st Annual "Cardiovascular Disease Update" The first annual Cardiovascular Disease Update, sponsored by Bristol-Myers Squibb and hosted by the Cardiovascular Sciences Collaborative Program, was successfully held on May 2, 1998 at the Weston Prince Hotel, Toronto. The half day event was attended by 96 family physicians, internists and trainees from across metro Toronto and focused on vascular issues and ischemic heart disease. CME credits were issued by the University of Toronto for 4 Mainpro-MI credits and 4.8 MOCOMP credits. The purpose of this half day event is to provide clinical insight into the diagnosis and treatment of current cardiovascular disease from a bench-to-bedside perspective. Each session was accompanied by audience discussion which continued informally during the buffet luncheon. The speakers and topics were:
Dr. J.C. Monge, Cardiologist, St. Michael's Hospital
Dr. Frank Silver, Neurologist, The Toronto Hospital
Dr. Beth Abramson, Cardiologist, The Toronto Hospital
Dr. Shaun Goodman, Cardiologist, St. Michael's Hospital
Dr. Michael Bentley-Taylor, Chief, Division of Cardiology, Toronto East General Hospital Summer Activities The Collaborative Program, along with the Division of Cardiac Surgery, Department of Surgery, ran another very successful summer program. Applicants included undergraduate and medical school students from the University of Toronto as well as other Universities. The Collaborative Program provided a number of summer scholarships to help students who were unable to procure funding. Over the course of the summer, weekly seminars were presented by graduate students currently enrolled in the Collaborative Program and covered a range of topics with both clinical and basic science relevance. As well, the summer students are given the opportunity to present their summer work. An "end-of-summer" barbeque is held for both faculty and students in August. This highly successful program is enjoyed by all that participate.

DIRECTOR'S COMMENTS:In its' sixth year, the Cardiovascular Sciences Collaborative Program (CSCP) continues to serve its constituents and develop appropriate liaisons with departments with an interest in cardiovascular sciences. Enrolment has increased as shown in the following graph where it can be seen that during the current academic year we had 12 Masters and 12 PhD trainees active in the program. Aside from 2 students who chose not to continue their graduate training for personal reasons, the number of students who convocated increased to 5. Enrolment also increased 71% to 24 students. Bound copies of each graduating students' thesis is kept in the Program office.Annual student meetings ensure continued satisfaction with the program. Our postgraduate follow-up shows that the graduates of this past year have gone on to pursue either academic or research careers (refer to Convocated Students/Follow-Up section). During the course of this past year there have been numerous administrative and departmental changes in the Faculty of Medicine. To accommodate these changes the Program has reaffirmed its connections with the Department of Community Health and initiated a tie with the new Faculty of Physical Education and Health, accommodating the Exercise Science group who transferred from Community Health and are now their own graduate department within the new faculty. This past year the CSCP awards programs helped support a number of our trainees. The Medtronic of Canada Travel Award monies helped a number of students to attend scientific meetings and present their work. As well, the $63,000 we raised and were able to endow allowed the successful launch of the OSOTF bursary which will provide much needed financial relief to deserving students in the Program. These funds will be available on an annual basis to help those Program students with demonstrated academic and research excellence in financial need. The Bigelow Book Prize, in recognition of an outstanding graduate student in the Program, continues to be the highlight of the year. Apart from the annual luncheon, a plaque will be issued to commemorate this annual event. The 1st Annual Cardiovascular Update was conceived and jointly run with the generous support of Bristol-Myers Squibb. This half day event provides a clinical update and insights to interested trainees, specialists and general practitioners in the cardiovascular field. Each year a different focus will be highlighted. Funds in support of the Program's infrastructure continues to be a source of concern. Initiatives continue and corporate sponsors such as Bristol-Myers Squibb and Merck Frosst Canada are recognized for their outstanding annual support of graduate education in cardiovascular sciences at the University of Toronto. A more permanent solution is required if we hope to allow student enrolment to increase beyond the current manageable level. The new MSC3060/3061 modular course design has met with resounding success. Having 4 modules to select from has made the course mandated at the PhD level an easy option to fulfill and reviews have reflected this. Frequent review of the course content occurs to ensure that current technologies and research foci that are leading edge are represented. This is critical if they are to serve as our flagship courses for our trainees. For the 1998-99 academic year, we plan to continue our current activities to the best of our abilities and pursue the following priorities:
